Discuss an engagement Case studies

Background

Experience across startups, enterprise, federal, service provider and enterprise environments, and global operations.

Engagements draw on work at ASRC Federal, including 70+ sites · 25+ engineers led, ~900% in 90 days, and delivering scale under pressure while maintaining continuity. Additional outcomes include 35–40% infrastructure and operating cost reduction (Growth-stage SaaS · Security Platform) through automation and governance, and eliminating over $2M in unnecessary AI infrastructure spend at an SMB SaaS company through centralized controls.

The practice did not begin as a formal go-to-market plan. It started as repeated, high-stakes problem solving: stepping in, delivering, and recognizing the patterns. Environments preparing for rapid scale, leadership gaps during transitions, reliability and cost crises, and teams that needed sequencing and guardrails rather than more tools.

That evolution is documented in essays such as Shipping vs Thinking and the playbook From Zero to One Hundred. Named client relationships and successes; some communities are no longer operating. Metrics and anonymized proof are on Clients and Successes.

Reliability Lounge

A passion project and operator community, separate from NullorNaN client engagements.

Matt McGowan is Founder & Operator at Reliability Lounge—a community for operators, separate from NullorNaN client engagements. The community focuses on honest reliability work: debugging paths, wrong assumptions, and what holds up under pressure. It began as Dog House Cafe and was formalized as Reliability Lounge as the focus sharpened. Community building continues alongside advisory and operating work; NullorNaN client engagements remain the priority.

Lounge essays are syndicated here when they inform how NullorNaN advises; see operating notes for the full list.

Approach

Selective, outcome-focused, and built for executive sponsors.

Selective client load

Work is scheduled by fit, urgency, and impact within a small concurrent client load. Executive sponsorship and measurable outcomes within 90 days are required.

Operator credibility

Advice is grounded in systems engineering, incident practice, FinOps, and real scale, not theoretical frameworks.

Senior partnership

Enable CTOs and founders; do not bypass them. The goal is durable capability on your team.

Clear communication

Deliverables are legible to boards and engineering alike: memos, sequencing plans, and accountable next steps.
